Carowinds water park set to open after repairs

After passing inspection, Carowinds Water Park is ready to open for visitors Memorial Day weekend.

Safety inspectors had to sign off on the replacement of stairs and landings on the towers of two water slides after engineers found problems.

Last week, a spokeswoman for the park said they had found the problems on a routine inspection this spring.

But North Carolina state inspection records show that inspectors had identified problems on those same towers last year.

In an email, the spokeswoman said safety is their first priority and that Carowinds has one of the best safety records in the industry.

The water park is set to open on Saturday.

Man busted for stealing from race teams for years, police say

A man is accused of stealing from race teams at speedways across the country.

Detectives recently searched Steven Sander’s Georgia home to find wallets, cash, credit cards, Social Security cards and $130,000 in unused gift cards.

"We've traced a majority of this stuff back to victims who had documented this stuff getting stolen, again, at raceways across the country," police said.

Sanders was arrested in Daytona in March after someone videotaped him stealing from an RV.

Police said Sanders got away with his crimes for years. So far, police said there are 43 victims.
