California memorial service for Cornelius next week
Thumbnail image

A memorial service — with tributes from Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson — will be held for “Soul Train” founder Don Cornelius Feb. 16 in Hollywood Hills, Calif. Cornelius, the former 75-year-old South Side native who died Feb. 1 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his California home, will be memorialized at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. His family is expecting around 1,000 friends and family members at the “semi-private” service. The Rev. Jesse Jackson will give the eulogy. Others expected to pay tribute are Lionel Richie, George Duke and Donnie McClurkin. On Thursday, Cornelius was cremated. Son Tony Cornelius said …

Paul McCartney And Dave Grohl: The Grammys And Beyond

Sir Paul McCartney is plotting his return to rock. His new album Kisses On The Bottom features The Beatle crooning standards (and two brand new standard-ish tunes), backed by Diana Krall’s band. But his next album promises to be his most rocking in a while: rumor has it that he’s working with his bro, Dave Grohl. Supposedly, when Dave formed a supergroup called Them Crooked Vultures a couple of years back with Josh Homme (from the band Queens Of The Stone Age) and Led Zeppelin alumni John Paul Jones, Sir Paul was a bit bummed not to have gotten the invite to play bass. So Grohl may be making up for it by playing on Paul’s next LP. Rough life!

Last time Paul McCartney performed at the Grammys back in 2009 Grohl backed him up on drums… and wouldn’t you know it, both guys are going to be at the ceremony this weekend. Don’t be surprised to see Grohl on the drumkit behind Paul Sunday night. Here’s the rundown of the weekend in Paul and Dave: Paul is being honored by NARAS as their MusiCares Person Of The Year two nights before the Grammys.

The Foo Fighters (who covered “Band On The Run” in 2007) will be among the artists performing Paul’s classics to pay tribute to the man (Paul will be in attendance and is supposed to perform as well). Then, at Sunday night’s Grammys, Paul is scheduled to perform a song from his new album, and Grohl’s Foo Fighters will play something from their Wasting Light album, which got them a boatload of nominations. They’re also participating in a tribute to electronic music, along with Lil’ Wayne, Chris Brown and DJs David Guetta and Deadmau5.

The Foo Fighters are touring internationally during March through early April, and in May they return to the States for a pair of festivals (The New Orleans Jazzfest and Bamboozle in Asbury Park, New Jersey). Sir Paul, on the other hand, doesn’t have any tour dates scheduled right now. So here’s hoping that they get together soon and kick out some “Helter Skelter” and “I’m Down” style jams soon.

Walter’s Perspective: Cop Blog Created Controversy Over City Sticker

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Great Chicago Sticker Shock. The vehicle sticker that shook City Hall. It’s gone, out of the news, into the garbage, never to be stuck on a Chicago windshield.

And the boy who designed it — the winner of a citywide contest for it -– he’s gone, too, out of the news and stuck with shame, reported to have drawn on that sticker the symbol of a street gang, which he did not do.

So why the sticker shock? Because a blog on the Internet groused about the sticker -– a popular blog by and about Chicago police, too obscene for me to name it.

Other posts on the blog? “Can Chicago ever get a police superintendent that doesn’t kiss the BLEEP of inner-city blacks?” A cartoon of nuns at a bar.

A trashy at times and vulgar blog, beneath the dignity of Chicago police. The vehicle sticker on the blog was sticker shock, so it had to go.

But don’t blame and shame that boy. Blame and shame the blog.
